Grassroots Skill Development

June 7th, 2010

With the Canadian Skills Competition having been recently completed last month, and the SkillsUSA Championships coming up in a few weeks, if you are involved in the skilled trades this is an important time for the future of so many industries.

Skills CanadaThe 16th Canadian Skills Competition took place in Waterloo, Ontario from May 20-23, and saw over 550 competitors showcase their skills in more than 40 events.

It is obvious how important the development of skilled trades is, and the promotion of choosing careers in skilled trades, when you see how involved the Government of Canada is in the process and how much money they are devoting to the cause.

SkillsUSAIn the U.S., coming up at the end of June, from the 20-25 is the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Taking place during the week is the SkillsUSA Championships, which are billed as “the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation”.

Last year there were over 5,400 contestants in 91 events. That is a lot of skill being demonstrated.

According to the SkillsUSA website, the “philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs.”

These kinds of events are important for promoting the choice of skilled trades as a career, because employers are having a hard time filling these jobs. According to a poll of U.S. employers, skilled and manual trades were the third hardest type of position to fill in 2009.

It looks like those of us that are involved in the skills training sector, especially those at the grassroots level, will all have to keep trying to improve the quality of the tradespersons coming out of training programs, and helping them to maintain their skills throughout their careers!

2010 EC&M Product of the Year AwardsAnother big awards announcement for Simutech!

We recently received the news that our Troubleshooting Skills Series V4 software package was named a Category Winner in the 2010 EC&M Product of the Year awards. We entered the programs in the Computers & Software category, and the judges chose them as the best entry!

The winning entry was on display at the EC&M booth at the Electric West 2010 trade show in Las Vegas from March 16-18. It was great to see our software recognized by such a prominent player in the industry.

I also got a chance to speak with Mike Eby, the Editor of EC&M, while I was at the show and he mentioned that he just knew that the judges would like the programs once they saw them. It’s nice to have people who believe in the software just as much as we do.

Here are some of the comments recorded by the judging panel:

“This product offers a definite improvement in safety.”

“A good training tool.”

“Exciting software.”

Electric West 2010

March 22nd, 2010

Last week Electric West 2010 was held in Las Vegas, Nevada so I took a few days to go and check it out and “keep an ear to the ground” in regards to what’s happening in the industry.

Electric West is the largest independent trade show that serves the electrical design, construction and maintenance market – delivering a full spectrum of electrical professionals seeking solutions to their daily challenges.

While there I met up with some of the people responsible for keeping us all informed on what’s going on, from publications such as EC&M, Electrical News, and Electrical Contractor just to name a few. You can actually see some photos and videos of the show on Electrical News’ new website.

I learned a lot about the industry and the trends and highly recommend that anyone in the electrical contracting industry make a point of checking it out next year. I believe it will be held in Long Beach, California.

Based on my discussions with some people there next year will hopefully be a bigger show, you know, once the economy finally turns around.
